I grew up in St. Louis in the ‘60s and spent the ‘70s in Kansas City. I graduated from the Art Institute with a degree in printmaking (etching) in 1979.
During the ‘80s I lived in a log cabin near the Current River in rural Missouri. That's where my four sons were born, as well as my first picture book, EARTH CIRCLES (NY: Walker, 1989).
I spent the ’90s in St. Louis, where I developed a creative writing/art program for children called PictureBookMaking. As a Springboard to Learning teacher in urban schools I helped over 1,000 children make picture books! Later, through the Kennedy Center for the Arts, I held workshops for teachers so they could offer PictureBookMaking in their own classrooms.
I also worked on my own picture book ideas during this time. My art samples show my explorations in pencil, ink, crayon, oil pastel, scratchboard, and digital art. Notice that I began working in black and white, added color, then subtracted it again.
Now I live in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where I’ve been working in ceramics and learning the art of sgraffito. So, once again I find myself with an etching needle in my hand. But instead of scraping through wax into zinc, I'm scraping through black slip into white clay.
The figures on my tiles tell stories about our relationships to each other and to our planet.
They also tell me they want to star in picture books!
